Research Project Instructions

The project is a process whereby, one comes up with an ideal and completes a project. It is not an assignment.
Consult canvas discussion board and/or assignment page. This page and also the canvas conferences/expo page are two best places for deciding on project. But you need to pick one project,
Listed below are several project groups and titles, you need to look through and come up with a project. Your project title should be unique.

Consult schedule and canvas for exact dates. But in general projects have following key canvas milestones:

  • Week1:
    Review this page Project Titles
    Watch or attend an Orientation/project web casts
    Think about something you want to do
    cliché: Those who are good at what they do are surpassed by those who work hard. Those who work hard are surpassed by those who love what they are doing.

  • Week 2:
    Complete discussion board assignment on ranking previous top projects so far and expo/conference review
    Look at previous top projects and creative ideas at expo/conference to help formulate a project idea

  • Week 3:
    Goal = Project Title LIst + top 8 Projects + expo/conference creativity + Independent throught → formulate an initial Ideal
    Select a tentative project title and post title on canvas discussion board
    Go back to the previous projects and watch student webcasts that are similar to your idea

  • Week 5:
    Write up a tentative project abstract and add it to your project title

  • Week 7:
    Review discussion board presentation steps

  • Week 8
    Present your project on live web-cast. (Sunday night)
    E-Mail me your project viewgraphs
    Comment on other student project using canvas discussion board (Monday/Wednesday after Project Presentations)

Programming and AI Options

 

Graphics 3D and Adobe

  • In Spring plan to add Adobe Character Animator - its neat - Creative Cloud license for students.
  • We should be able to get access to Saddleback solid works class. 3D printers, Note 3D printers have come down in price. Project Group 1 Become familiar with a 3D editor, or virtual world editor; Create an object or Avatar; Save the 3D entity in stl format ( VRML is a standard format but 3-D printers use stl) and print it out using a Saddleback's 3D printer or and EWD 3D printer or an Rapid prototyping facilities at UCI.
  • Prefer is you use the 3-D Modeling tool, Google sketch up, with kerkythea rendering system. You can export kerkythea into Flash or into kerkythea for rendering. In Rendering you add surface textures, and light sources. Kerkythea can then export multiple JPEGs for use in Flash animation. Maya 3D and 3D Max are alternate solutions to this process.

  • Create a virtual character avatar or object in WoW, 2nd Life or SimCity; look into doing a 3D OpenGL capture and using a 3D editor - print out the Avatar. In this class you may not get far enough along to actually print the Avatar.

Like Math Future Gaming and Animation Could Well be Geometric Algebra

Future animation and gaming could very like be geometric algebra instead of trigonometry/linear algebra. Geometric Algebra is very effective at solving key problems like Hidden-line removal - Wikipedia .
In General Geometric Algebraic may become the future system for computer games and animation. To actually understand the math, you need a background in linear algebra. But you can still do a report on this if you have not taken linear algebra. Linear algebra covers matrices and vector space. It is normally a sophomore or junior year college level course.

Consider a project on how gaming sites use bias in reviewing games. When Toms Hardware Page first came out is was unbiased, as soon as it became popular, his HW reviews were very biased. The same thing happens on many gaming sites, this is another good project title.

Consider a project on why some games have withstood the test of time. 

Consider a project on the importance of ergonomics when playing games and using smart phones. We are creating a generation of individual that will have serious neck and back problems at an early age. Some are actually developing cervical bones spurs in their teens.
