Lord of the Rings
key art poster

The Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards is the only international competition honoring the individuals responsible for the design and creation of motion picture and home entertainment marketing materials. In 2005 they include two student categories in the annual competition, movie posters and movie trailers. The Golden Globe Award winners for best drama and best comedy from the previous year were the basis for all student entries.

My submission for the third movie in the LotR trilogy focuses around the movie series' repeated theme of the character Aragorn's hesitation to claim his birthright. Throughout the trilogy, Aragorn battles against doubt and the lack of confidence that both he himself and mankind have in his ability to lead and their ability to triumph over the weaknesses of the human heart.

In my poster, the sword represents Aragorn's noble birthright as well as the strength and ability necessary to conquer what ails him, his people and the world. His hands, reaching from the darkness, drawing on the sword are symbolic of emerging from uncertainty and dutifully accepting his destiny. The original tagline and balanced, symmetrical layout help emphasize the strength and resolution behind this act.
